Chapter 10:

Solo

Full daylight filtered into the tunnel as Drake drifted along. He finally came to a dead end in the pipe and began treading water. Drake gasped and gulped for air-his voice echoed along the hollow tube. He could hear the water in the background, gushing and draining away into another pipe, he assumed. He flipped over and dove down to the base of the pipe, following the pull of the water. It took him back a couple of metres. He searched the base only to find a small grid where the water filtered through. He knew that he couldn’t get out that way; it was too small to fit through. He swam back to the surface, the cold air chilling his cheeks. He looked up and saw that above him was a cut-out in the pipe. Through half-closed eyes, he could only make out a pure white bar of light, no shapes or shaded areas. Drake’s heart sank. He could see his predicament. The circumference of the tunnel was too great, so he couldn’t stand on the bottom. He had to somehow reach up, grab the cut-out and pull himself up. There were no grips to speak of or any way of climbing up the smooth, curved inner wall. He realised that once his strength was gone, he would eventually sink and drown.

‘HELP! Please help me. Scott, Crystal, can you hear me?’ he called out in-between gulps of water. ‘Please, I’m stuck in here.’ There was no answer, and he felt so alone. ‘I’m going to die here,’ he said, his sickly voice echoing along the endless length of the tube. Once he stopped complaining, all he could hear was the lapping and dripping of water.

‘Aaaaaaargh,’ he screamed in frustration and sank under the water again, eventually hitting the bottom. Drake pushed himself back up, and when he floated on the surface, he began to calm down. His foot hurt. This isn’t helping, he reasoned. Then something occurred to him. In the middle of his rant, deep underwater, he felt something against his right foot. What was it? Ignoring his pain, Drake dog paddled past the slot of light which gave a clear view. The water was perfectly translucent. He didn’t know how that could be possible; he’d just come from the sea. But he wasn’t going to question anything anymore. This world wasn’t normal, not like the real world, his world. He gazed into the water, and when the ripples settled, he saw some kind of wheel. It was on a shaft, raised above the inner surface, that’s why he caught his heel against it.

‘What does that do?’ he felt himself asking. Drake didn’t wait any longer and took a deep breath. He dived down and grasped the small wheel. He tried to turn it to the right, but it wouldn’t budge. Then he tried left, but his breath was running out. He was sure that he felt a slight movement. He swam straight to the surface again. His breathing was rapid, and his mind filled with wonder.
